Since the beginning of this course, my professional knowledge and expertise has developed in several ways. First, I have gained additional knowledge and skills in improving the quality of healthcare, as well as patient safety, by understanding the need for ventilator bundles in preventing VAP. In addition, the course has also improved my knowledge and skills in the translation of present evidence into my nursing practice (McCaffrey, 2012), specifically through the use of best practices in preventing VAP in acute care facilities. Moreover, the course has also improved my knowledge and skills in finance and healthcare policy, which are important in the functioning of the healthcare system, while also enhancing my knowledge of the importance of collaboration and communication among healthcare staff to the provision of safe and high quality patient care. Finally, my knowledge and skills in disease prevention and health promotion at the individual level have also improved because of this course (McCaffrey, 2012).
DNP Experiences and their Role in Anticipated Contribution/Leadership
The DNP course has prepared me for future contribution and leadership in nursing by increasing my skills and knowledge for practicing nursing in an ever-challenging environment of healthcare. Some of the skills and knowledge acquired include expertise in inter-disciplinary, autonomous, and direct health systems management and patient care management (Fitzpatrick & Kazer, 2013). Enhanced understanding of trends inherent in healthcare financing, as well as the importance of sharing information in the healthcare environment and system also augmented these advanced leadership skills and knowledge. This should prepare me to provide solutions to various issues encountered in the healthcare environment, as well as to develop strategies aimed at addressing emerging challenges both as a nursing contributor and as leader. Most importantly, my experience in DNP has increased my abilities as a nursing contributor by enhancing my knowledge and skills in research and scholarly work, while also enhancing my skills as a nursing leader by enabling me to translate research evidence into practice (Fitzpatrick & Kazer, 2013). Finally, the course, through the capstone project, has helped me develop innovative problem solving approaches in relation to the delivery of quality healthcare.
