The situation witnessed at Abington Memorial Hospital came about because of several factors, majorly racial discrimination and the failure to acknowledge the significance of the different cultures that exist within our society.
Given that the situation arose after proposal by the patient and her family, it is apparent that they held the judgment that healthcare workers of African-American descent lack the expertise to offer high quality medical services. On the other hand, various stakeholders within the institution found the state of affairs offensive, as from the mechanisms adopted by the organization, healthcare professionals of certain heritages are better placed to deliver high quality services as compared to those of African-American descent.
In as much as the situation came in handy in averting any confrontation that would have come up between the Caucasian family and the African-American healthcare professionals, such a position would have been disastrous to the establishment had the management of the organization failed to express regret. This is because the specialists of African-American descent would have been highly discouraged by the position, a factor that would have contributed to them lacking interest in the course of discharging their duties.
An alternative mechanism to handling such a situation would have been for the organization to fail to honor the patient’s request; as the position would be unethical and does not act in accordance with the philosophies of human resource management (Walter, 2014). Moreover, embracing such a position would be illegal, for the affected employees might sue because of discrimination, an act that would be expensive for the healthcare facility.
